Meditation is like going to the beach. We go to the beach to absorb the sun, enjoy fresh air, and getaway from the stresses of life. We go to relax. Same thing, meditation. It is an opportunity to dive deep within ourselves, feel peace and bliss, and without having to go to the beach.

The benefits of meditation are countless. For those on the spiritual path, it is a way to connect and experience the soul. For those practicing meditation for health purposes, it reduces high blood pressure, dissolves negative toxins, and reduces stress. For those practicing meditation to try something new, its a great way to discover yourself, find peace, and rediscover purpose in life.


1. How to Choose a Meditation Time

The importance of setting a meditation time is that you create self-discipline. For example, everyday at 5:00pm you promise to yourself to sit down for 10 minutes, and relax.

Choosing the right time for meditation often depends on your schedule. Usually the best times for meditation is in the early morning or in the late evening, because everyone is asleep. Also, there is a lot of spiritual energy to be absorbed during the early/late hours; but do what feels right for you. For beginner's when the environment is quiet, this helps you to focus and concentrate more.

2. How to Select a Meditation Location

The importance of having a meditation location or meditation spot is creating a sacred spiritual place.

When you know a place is deeply special to you, you will prevent negative energy or thoughts to enter it. You want to protect it, keep it safe, and respect it.

You can either choose a spot that is within your home or a peaceful location like a park, beach, or mountain rock. Find your own place. If you choose to create a meditation area in your home, find a place where children or your wife/husband will not go. Even a corner in your room can be a meditation spot.

If you choose a place in your home, setup a little table or alter and place some candles, incense, and if you have a guru (spiritual teacher) or someone very special to you, place his or her picture on it. Another tip, is to have a small cd player and a "natural sounds" music cd. These suggestions will help you keep your meditation spot very special. Everytime you look at your meditation spot, you are remind to relax, be calm, and peaceful.

The importance of finding the right posture for meditation is to help you feel relaxed and comfortable.

In the beginning, if sitting cross-legged is difficult for you, use a chair. Remember, there is no one way to meditation. Is there only one way to relax? No. Do what feels right for you.

5. How to Know when Meditation Time is Done

The importance of setting an ending time to meditation is to create self-discipline, routine, and endurance.

Setting a quiet alarm, or music to turn, or even a bell chime after a certain time has passed allows you to slowly end your meditation practice. As a meditation beginner, start with 5 minutes for the first week. Then second week, try 10 minutes. Slow increments of meditation times creates endurance.

So before you start meditation, set some kind of alarm. Remind yourself too that, "No matter what, until the alarm goes off, I will stay in my meditation spot." The mind will love to distract you and make excuses for you to leave your meditation. Just gently remind yourself. After no time, you will have so much self-discipline for meditation.

7. How to Practice Breathing Techniques for Meditation

The importance of practicing breathing techniques for meditation is to help you start calming your mind and increasing relaxation. Breathing, deep breathing, is one easy way to help you prepare for meditation and clear thoughts.

First take a deep breath, hold it for 5 seconds, then slowly breath out. Repeate this simple deep breathing exercise for 3 minutes. Notice how peaceful you start to feel after breathing with deep and slow breathing.
